Day 2

Last night at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery was fantastic - a big crowd, all strong performances, and the final duo of Jeff Henderson and Hermione Johnson played an absolutely stunning set!

Tonight is the first show at Chicks Hotel, in Port Chalmers. $10 on the door. We have six acts -

Noel Meek (Wellington/Auckland) starts the night with his beautiful soundscapes, followed by Dunedin's The Ladder is Part of the Pit. These guys played a stunning support to Matmos last year, and combine violin, cello, voice and homemade electronics.

Sonny Carver is Lucy Hunter and Reg Norris from Dunedin post-punk band Opposite Sex, and play haunting murder ballads with piano, vocal and guitar.

Eye are Peter Stapleton, Peter Porteous, Jon Chapman and are joined for this show by Nathan Thompson, which has flown over from Australia for the festival. They play improvised psych/noise/rock, with intense dynamics. Their new cassette tape(!) has just been released by New York label Badabing, and will be available.

Peter Kolovos is a Los Angeles improvising electric guitarist, who has been part of the American experimental underground for 20 years.

The evening closes with the mighty Omit. A huge table of cracked and archaic analog electronics create an otherworldy ambient techno of sorts - trancelike and beautiful.

All of the acts will have film/video accompaniment.

The first act will start at 8.15pm, so make sure you get there in time! The magic Chicks bus is running to and from town - it leaves at 7.30 from outside the Countdown supermarket on Cumberland St, and stops outside the University library at 7.35. The cost is $5, or free with a Radio One card. The bus will return to town after the show.

There is also the regular Port Chalmers bus service operating, for those who want to come out to Port earlier and grab a drink at the Portsider bar in the main street.

See you there!

Today's the day!

After month's of organising, tonight is the first show of Lines of Flight 2015!

Here is a description from Sally Macintyre of her Radio Cegeste piece which opens the festival -

"Tomorrow at 8pm I'm kicking off the 2015 Lines of Flight festival. this set like other recent and forthcoming work is based on the sonic archival traces within Pakeha natural history literature of two New Zealand birds which went extinct in colonial Aotearoa before available recording technologies could capture their songs. mini FM transmissions of notations of Huia songs transcribed into a range of media (morse code, music box, wax cylinder and piano) will be supplemented by... EVP recordings of mounted specimens of both bird species collected in museums in New Zealand and Europe, plus some live and re-transmitted 'empty' accordion improvisations by myself on a broken colonial-era squeezebox and some more musical accordion drones contributed by Eddie Eves, both in reference to the letter Sir Walter Buller published in 1905 from an anonymous bushman describing a Laughing Owl's silent appearance whenever he played this instrument in the forest. Campbell Walker will be providing some appropriate live-cinematic accompaniment to the 20 radios and other bits & pieces i'll be channeling the ghosts of these birds through on the night."

Stanier Black Five will be combing wine-tasting and sound in her performance (!), the Aletheia Ensemble 4-piece perform an electro-acoustic composition, and the night finishes with the amazing Jeff Henderson/Hermione Johnson sax + prepared piano duo. At the last Lines of Flight these two took out the overall "best performance" for the entire Fringe festival. Not to be missed.

Radio Cegeste will be starting her set just after 8pm, so don't be late!

Second Announcement

Memory Burn, at Lines of Flight 2013

Lines of Flight 2015 – Second Announcement

The legendary Lines of Flight experimental music festival returns to Dunedin in March as part of the 2015 Dunedin Fringe Festival. It features sixteen hours of performances, showcasing experimentation across a wide range of musical genres: from trancelike drones to fiery free jazz, from delicate electro-acoustics to roaring walls of noise, from cutting edge digital technology to ingenious homemade instruments.

Following the initial announcement back in December, the full lineup has now been confirmed, with the addition of two US acts bringing an international flavour to the festival.

Peter Kolovos is a Los Angeles-based improvising guitarist who was formerly a member of the group Open City. Over the past twenty years he has developed an incredibly physical and dynamic musical language for the electric guitar.

Two To Tutu Too are a Baltimore duo comprising self-described 'sound mechanic' Neil Feather and NZ ex-pat composer/pianist Rosie Langebeer. Neil Feather has been working in this field for over thirty years and is internationally renowned as an instrument inventor and performer.
The opening night at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery will include Christchurch electroacoustic group the Aletheia Ensemble and also Stanier Black Five. Her piece 'Oenosthesia' is a multi-sensory performance exploring the synergies between sound and taste, and was originally created during an artist’s residency in Southern Italy.
The vibrant Dunedin musical scene is also strongly represented, with  emerging artists such as Nick Graham, Birdation, Sonny Carver and Rubbish Film Unit who will join the other more established names.
Plus the highlights from the first announcement: Our Love Will Destroy the World's ecstatic noise, Jeff Henderson and Hermione Johnson’s superb saxophone and prepared piano duo, the hypnotic analogue synth beats of the mysterious Omit, improvised psych/rock from Dunedin’s Eye, turntable cut-up mastery from Wellington’s Alphabethead, a rare performance by the godfathers of free noise A Handful of Dust, featuring Bruce Russell and Alastair Galbraith, and a very rare live outing by the Sandoz Lab Technicians.
Lines of Flight has always had a strong multi-media component and once again film will be an integral part of many of the sound performances, bringing a third element to the experience.
Tickets are available via the Dunedin Fringe Festival website, www.dunedinfringe.org.nz

Lines of Flight 2015 – First announcement

The legendary experimental music festival “Lines of Flight” returns to Dunedin early next year, as part of the 2015 Dunedin Fringe Festival. Over three days in late March a selection from the cream of New Zealand’s sonic explorers will be performing to enthusiastic audiences from here and overseas.

The first “Lines of Flight” festival was started in 2000 by Peter Stapleton and Kim Pieters as a showcase for experimental music and film; the 2015 edition will be the 9th iteration, and in that time it has gained an international reputation. Sixteen hours of performances will show a wide range of approaches to experimentation; from trancelike drones to free jazz, from delicate electro-acoustics to roaring walls of noise, from cutting edge digital technology to primitive homemade instruments.

"We use the word 'experimental' as a very loose, generalised term," event co-organiser Peter Stapleton explains. "It is  an attitude to go a bit further. I think it is an aesthetic rather than a genre because it does cross a number of musical genres."

Highlights include Our Love Will Destroy the World’s ecstatic noise project, Jeff Henderson and Hermione Johnson’s amazing saxophone and prepared piano duo, the hypnotic analogue synth beats of the reclusive Omit, and the psych/noise improvised rock of Dunedin’s Eye. Wellington’s Alphabethead brings his turntable cut-up mastery to the festival, free noise legends Bruce Russell and Alastair Galbraith perform as A Handful of Dust, and electro-acoustic improvisers Sandoz Lab Technicians make a very rare appearance.

Film has always been a part of Lines of Flight festivals, and many of the musicians have made their own films. These will screen during their performances, giving a multimedia feel to proceedings.

Tickets will be available via the Dunedin Fringe Festival website, www.dunedinfringe.org.nz

The confirmed lineup so far is as follows:

- Our Love Will Destroy the World
- Jeff Henderson and Hermione Johnson
- Sandoz Lab Technicians

- Alphabethead
- Teen Haters (Peter Wright and Helen Greenfield)

....more to be announced.
